Maslenitsa came to us from our ancient Slavic pagan past as a multi-day holiday of “farewell to winter.” Thus, Maslenitsa divided its two main seasons in the Slavic folk calendar - winter and spring. This holiday celebrated the transition to spring agricultural work. Later, the Christian Church included Maslenitsa among its holidays that precede Lent.
It is believed that Maslenitsa was originally associated with the day of the spring solstice, but with the adoption of Christianity it began to precede Lent and depend on its timing.
According to its custom, the church “appointed” its own holiday in place of the pagan holiday, specially shifting the boundaries of Lent for this purpose. After this, Maslenitsa was actually perceived by the Christian church as a religious holiday and received the name Cheese or Cheese Week, but this did not change its inner essence.
Maslenitsa is celebrated in the last week before Lent, seven weeks before Easter. The main attribute of Maslenitsa are pancakes and folk festivities. Maslenitsa is a cheerful farewell to winter, illuminated by the joyful anticipation of imminent warmth and spring renewal of nature.
For Russians, Maslenitsa began on Sunday a week before Lent, i.e. for the so-called meat fast, when it was the last time it was allowed to eat meat. On this day, small family feasts were usually held, for example, the father-in-law invited the son-in-law to “finish the ram.” In some places they lit fires, explaining to the children that they supposedly “burn meat” in them. Actually, the “meeting” of Maslenitsa was not celebrated everywhere: children and youth went out to the ski slopes with pancakes to “welcome Maslenitsa”, had fun, and rode down the mountains.
The main food for Maslenitsa was pancakes (in addition to dairy products and fish). The first pancake was usually intended for the dead: it was placed on a shrine or dormer window - “for parental souls,” and sometimes it was given to the poor also for “remembrance of the soul.” Pancakes, as well as household utensils used for their preparation (brush, frying pan, etc.) were given to the Maslenitsa scarecrow. They, as a symbol of savory food, were destroyed in the fire during Maslenitsa. Pancakes, as the most important attribute of Maslenitsa festivities, were mentioned more than once in songs, for example: “Oh, we celebrated Maslenitsa, We covered the mountain with pancakes...”
A significant part of the customs at Maslyanitsa was related to the theme of family and marriage relations (see the issue “Northern Russian Wedding”). During this period, newlyweds who got married during the past year were honored. The love-marriage theme is also reflected in specific Maslenitsa customs dedicated to the punishment of boys and girls who did not get married during the past year (who did not fulfill their life purpose).
Similar rituals became widespread in Ukraine and in Slavic Catholic traditions.
Among the various Maslenitsa customs, a prominent place is occupied by rituals of the agricultural and economic cycle and, in particular, magical actions aimed at enhancing the growth of cultivated plants. For example, in order for flax and hemp to grow “long” (tall), in Russia women rode down the mountains, trying to go as far as possible, and also fought, sang loudly, etc. In Ukraine and Belarus, women had fun and walked on Maslenitsa Thursday (called Vlasiy and Volosiy), believing that this will make the livestock on the farm better managed (cf. Vlasiy, Veles).
The most important day of Maslenitsa week was Sunday - the ritual before the start of Lent. In Russia, this day was called Forgiveness Sunday, when close people asked each other for forgiveness for all the insults and troubles caused to them; in the evenings it was customary to visit cemeteries and “say goodbye” to the dead.
The main episode of the last day was the “farewell to Maslenitsa,” often accompanied by the lighting of bonfires. In Russia, for this day, they made a scarecrow of Maslenitsa from straw or rags, usually dressed it in women's clothing, carried it through the entire village, sometimes placing the scarecrow on a wheel stuck on top of a pole; leaving the village, the scarecrow was either drowned in an ice hole, burned, or simply torn into pieces. The straw left over from the scarecrow was scattered across the fields in order to ensure a good harvest and give fertility to the land. The ritual funeral of Maslenitsa was always accompanied by processions of mummers, carnivals, loud laughter, calls for Spring and demonstrative denigration of Maslenitsa in special couplets. In these songs, Maslenitsa is called (in connection with Lent, which comes immediately after the abundant feasts of Maslenitsa week) “deceiver,” “eater,” “pancake eater,” and other offensive nicknames.
Sometimes, instead of a doll, a living “Maslenitsa” was carried around the village: a smartly dressed girl or woman, sometimes even an old woman or an old man. Then, amid shouts and hoots, they were taken out of the village and dropped there or dumped in the snow (“held Maslenitsa”).
Where Maslenitsa scarecrows were not made, the ritual of “farewell to Maslenitsa” consisted mainly of lighting communal bonfires on a hill behind the village or near the river. In addition to firewood, they threw all sorts of old things into the fires - bast shoes, harrows, purses, brooms, barrels and other unnecessary things, previously collected by children throughout the village, and sometimes stolen specifically for this. Sometimes they burned a wheel in a fire, a symbol of the sun associated with the approaching spring; it was often put on a pole stuck in the middle of the fire.
In the central regions of Russia, “farewell to Maslenitsa” was accompanied by the removal of fast food, symbolizing Maslenitsa, from the cultural space. Therefore, in bonfires they actually sometimes burned the remains of pancakes and butter, and poured milk into it, but more often they simply told the children that all the quick dishes were burned in the bonfire (for example: “the milk burned and flew to Rostov,” etc.). Some customs were addressed to children and were supposed to frighten them and force them to obey: in the Nizhny Novgorod region, on the last Sunday of Maslenitsa week, a pole was installed in the center of the village, onto which a man with a broom climbed and, pretending to beat someone, shouted: “Don’t ask.” milk, pancakes, scrambled eggs.”
Farewell to Maslenitsa ended on the first day of Lent - Clean Monday, which was considered a day of cleansing from sin and fasting food. Men usually “rinsed their teeth”, i.e. they drank vodka in abundance, supposedly in order to rinse the remnants of the meager food out of their mouths; in some places, fist fights, etc. were organized to “shake out the pancakes.” On Clean Monday they always washed in the bathhouse, and women washed the dishes and “steamed” dairy utensils, cleaning them from fat and remnants of the milk.
Other customs and entertainments of Maslenitsa week included mummers (in Russia, mummers accompanied the stuffed Maslenitsa), driving a “goat” or “goat” (eastern Ukraine), fist fights and ball games (sometimes very cruel and ending in mutilation), cock and goose fights , swings, carousels, youth parties, etc.

Elderly people, relatives, godfathers, and matchmakers went to visit each other this week in decorated carts. The children had their own entertainment: sledding. Young people gathered when it was getting dark outside: they sang and danced.
On the last, Sunday, day of Maslenitsa, relatives went to visit each other, and the son-in-law and his wife came to the mother-in-law for pancakes. In the evening, the entire family had to have dinner together, since Lent began on Monday.
That evening, an extremely interesting and solemn ceremony was held in many places in Belarus. After dinner the owner sat down in a stern and pious mood. His brothers and sons came up to him in turn, after the woman, bowed to the ground and said: “Grant, father’s relatives, what kind of sagrash(s) will be in front of you with your right hand and tongue.” After listening to everyone, the owner, in turn, bowed to the ground to the entire family, thus asking forgiveness for all sins and mistakes.
